You may remember that this Van Gogh painting was stolen from Cairo’s Mohamed Mahmoud Khalil Museum in 2010 and is reputedly worth $50 million. Van Gogh’s Sunflowers is another very popular painting that we are asked to paint.  This is one of four paintings of sunflowers dating from August and September 1888. Van Gogh, also ‘produced a replica of this painting in January 1889, and perhaps another one later in the year. As you can see this is pretty much a repetition of the original National Gallery London version. The work was painted while Van Gogh was living in Arles,  just a month after he cut off his ear. Where is the original Sunflowers by Van Gogh?

This is a very interesting question actually. As I’ve said above,Van Gogh painted  a series of 12 Sunflowers (Tournesols) on canvas. The most commonly referred to Sunslower paintings are the seven he painted while in Arles in 18881889. There are actually two series of Sunflowers though. The first series depict sunflowers lying on the ground. This was executed in 1887 in Paris. Please look at the Sunflowers painting above.
