Van Gogh’s Poppy Flowers (also known as Vase and Flowers), worth £32 million was recently stolen from a Cairo museum in August 2010. It is believed to have been painted in 1887, just 3 years before the artist’s death.
According to Christie’s, Conor Jordan, Poppy Flowers is a significant painting because it represents a turning point in the artist’s painting style. “It shows him assimilating the influences of the French avant-garde after having arrived in 1886 (from Amsterdam), absorbing as much as possible the current trend of French painting.”
Funnily enough, this same Van Gogh painting was stolen from the Mahmoud Khalil Museum in 1978 and was found 2 years later in Kuwait! You would have thought the museum would have learnt from that episode but apparently more than half of their security cameras had been broken for some time.
Perhaps they should purchase a replica oil painting of Poppy Flowers to avoid further embarrassment? If you would like to commission a fine art reproduction oil painting of Van Gogh’s Poppy Flowers, you can do so here.
