Art brings enjoyment to so many of us. And when we visit a gallery and go to the latest exhibition of our favourite artist, be it Gauguin, Van Gogh, Freud, it’s only natural that we would want to bring the art that we love and see into our homes. Fabulous Masterpieces has been painting copies of paintings by famous artists for over 12 years now and I thought I’d show you a selection of our most popular paintings that we have been asked to paint by you, our customers.

After looking through all of the oil paintings that we’ve  been asked to copy over the past decade and analyzing all the data I thought I’d show you our top 20 most famous art copies in descending order. Van Gogh is by far the most popular artist. I would also like to stress that every single famous painting that you see on this page is a fine art copy reproduction painting that has been hand painted by Fabulous Masterpieces.

What I love about this painting is that none of the 3 central dancers look at the viewer it’s as if Degas is giving us a glimpse into their world, a world that we have not been invited into.

18. Cezanne’s Road to the Montagne Sainte-Victoire

Cezanne’s Road to the Montagne Sainte-Victoire is Number 18 of the most popular copies of paintings by famous artists that we’ve been asked to paint over the years. Cezanne was a post Impressionist artist and here in this reproduction painting the horizontal planes build dimension and draw the viewer into the landscape.

17. Manet’s A Bar at the Folies-Bergère

Manet new the Folies-Bergère well and this painting was his last major work. In the background you can see the hustle and bustle of the bar, which is in stark contrast to the detached expression on the barmaid’s face. The original painting is in the Courtauld gallery and measures 96 cm x 130 cm. 16 Van Gogh’s A Wheatfield with Cypresses

16th on our list of most popular famous paintings is Van Gogh’s A Wheatfield with Cypresses. Van Gogh painted several versions of this composition which he was at the psychiatric hospital of Saint-Paul de Mausole at St-Rémy in France. Above is our reproduction oil painting but the original can be seen in London’s National gallery and measures 72.1 cm × 90.9 cm (28.4 in × 35.8 in).

 

15. Da Vinci’s Salvator Mundi

When Da Vinci’s Salvator Mundi went under the hammer at Christie’s New York it became the most expensive painting ever auctioned, when it sold for the incredible amount of $450.3 million (£342.1m). 14. Canaletto’s Venice

Canaletto is arguably Venice’s most famous view-painter. He found that painting formulaic paintings such as this for tourists was highly lucrative.  The record price paid at auction for a Canaletto is £18.6 million for View of the Grand Canal from Palazzo Balbi to the Rialto, set at Sotheby’s in London in July 2005. 13. Da Vinci’s La Belle Ferronniere

It’s a beautiful portrait and again Da Vinci has used a dark background, which is a distinctive feature of many of his artworks (think Salvator Mundi, The Mona Lisa etc). 12. Monet’s Japanese Bridge

We have painted oil painting reproductions of Monet’s Japanese Bridge thousands of times. Everybody loves the way he has used colour and light to produce a truly beautiful and remarkable painting. I think, we have been asked to paint this famous painting so many times because flowers and nature in general and the colours that Monet has used, makes this a wonderful calming painting. Perfect for a bedroom.

 

11. Seurat’s Bathers at Asnières

This is a monumental painting, it measures 201 × 300 cm.  The artwork is of a suburban,  Parisian riverside scene. Poor Seurat wanted his painting to be a prominent statement with which he would make his mark at the official Salon (he was only 24 when he painted this), but it was rejected.  We’ve now come to the top 10 copies of paintings by famous artists.

 

10. Van Gogh’s Almond Blossom

Flowering trees were special to Van Gogh. They represent awakening and hope and as they blossom in spring they also represent new life. Almond Blossom was a gift for his brother Theo and sister-in-law Jo, who had just had a baby, so I’m sure you’ll agree it was a very fitting gift.

 

9. Da Vinci’s Madonna Litta

Above is a fine art copy of another massively famous painting – Da Vinci’s Madonna Litta. The Madonna Litta depicts the Virgin Mary breastfeeding Christ and illustrates motherly love. The blue cloak of Mary symbolizes the Church and her red dress is a symbol of the passion of Christ. The original Madonna Litta painting is actually in the Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg and only measures 42 cm x 33 cm.

 

8.  Klimt’s Adele Bloch Bauer

Klimt’s Adele Bloch-Bauer (1907) also known as the “Woman in Gold” is an extremely popular art reproduction by an extremely famous artist (Gustav Klimt) that we are asked to paint. Adele Bloch-Bauer was the only subject Klimt ever painted twice in full length. The Neue Galerie bought Adele Bloch-Bauer in 2006 for $135 Million.

 

7.  Turner’s The Fighting Temeraire

Turner is one of Britain’s most beloved and famous artists. His famous oil painting shows the final journey of the Temeraire, travelling along the river Thames where it was to be scrapped. The Temeraire had played a distinguished role in the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805. 6.  Van Gogh’s Sunflowers

Van Gogh painted two series of Sunflowers, the first series shows Sunflowers lying on the floor, the second series depicts them in a vase. 5. Vermeer’s Girl with a Pearl Earring

Vermeer’s Girl with a Pearl Earring is one of the most iconic paintings in the world.  Nicknamed the “Mona Lisa of the North” you could argue that it is beginning to rival the Mona Lisa in terms of exposure. 4. Klimt’s The Kiss

The Kiss is undoubtedly one of the most famous copies of paintings by famous artists that we are asked to paint, especially around Valentine’s day. Created in 1907-8 using oils and gold leaf by Gustav Klimt it was perceived to be pornographic by post-Victorian society even though the two figures are clothed. The Kiss is actually his last painting of his Gold Period where he incorporated gold leaf into his artwork. It measures 1.8 m x 1.8 m. 3.  Van Gogh’s Cafe Terrace at Night

Van Gogh’s Cafe Terrace at night makes the top 3 in our list of copies of paintings by famous artists. 5 of the paintings on this list are Van Gogh paintings, which just goes to show how popular his artwork is.  Van Gogh painted Cafe Terrace at Night in Arles, in 1888 and it’s one of his first paintings where he used a noctournal background. He described this painting to his sister in a letter and wrote:

“Here you have a night painting without black, with nothing but beautiful blue and violet and green and in this surrounding the illuminated area colors itself sulfur pale yellow and citron green. It amuses me enormously to paint the night right on the spot…”

2. Van Gogh’s Starry Night

Van Gogh’s Starry Night was painted in June 1889. The painting shows the view from his east-facing window at the asylum at Saint-Rémy-de-Provence.
