Monet’s Charing Cross (1903) goes under the hammer at Sotheby’s. Estimate £15 -23 Million.

Claude Monet’s Charing Cross Bridge (1903) is going under the hammer at Sotheby’s on November 12th, 2019. Monet painted several views of Charing Cross Bridge from his hotel room at the Savoy between 1899 – 1905. Whilst not as well-known as the Waterlilies series, Monet’s impressions of the London landscape are still celebrated around the world.

Monet (unlike most of us) had a liking for London fog: –

“What I like most about London is fog. Without it, London would not be a beautiful city. It’s the fog that gives it its depth.”

The fast changing weather and fog conditions on the river meant that Monet couldn’t persist on painting a certain scene for an inordinate amount of time.

Monet painted nearly 100 paintings of London including the 37 paintings of Charing Cross. And according to Sotheby’s they rarely come up for auction. This 1903 Charing Cross painting is up for sale with an estimate of £15 – 23 Million ($20M – $30M).
