Why you should be wary buying Chinese Art Reproductions

Chinese Art Reproductions

If you’ve ever done a Google search for “Art Reproductions” or “Fine Art Copies”  you know doubt would have come across a number of large Chinese art reproduction companies, offering reproduction oil painting from as little as $100.   It’s a tempting offer isn’t it? Having an actual oil painting hand-painted for you of your favourite piece of art from around £70. Unfortunately though, as you well know, if it sounds too good to be true it usually is.

The danger of Chinese art reproductions

I have no problem that Chinese art reproductions are painted in China.  Whether you like it or not, nearly everything we buy from clothes to electrical goods are imported from India or China, the problem is though when it comes to art reproductions and oil portraits buying direct from a lot of Chinese art reproduction companies means a total lack of quality control.  I’ll give you an example.

Van Gogh’s Bedroom – A Chinese art reproduction VERSUS The original

As I run Fabulous Masterpieces, an art reproduction company here in London UK , I get a lot of emails from Chinese art reproduction companies, which try to sell us their art replicas. So as you can imagine, I get to see a lot of Chinese art reproductions, that vary in quality, take a look at this one that was sent through to me of Van Gogh’s Bedroom in Arles. The art reproduction is on top, whilst the original is below for you to compare and contrast.

Generally speaking, the people who contact us wanting to commission an art reproduction of their favourite oil painting are quite discerning. Some might have owned the original, nearly all would have certainly seen it in a gallery or exhibition. Our clients want a faithful replica and as you can see the Chinese art reproduction above is certainly not that.

1. The tone of the original and art reproduction are totally different. The reproduction is a lot brighter.

2. In the original there’s not much green on the floor, in the replica for some reason the artist has added a lot of bright green.

3. The stool on the left of the painting look totally different.

4. The paintings on the wall of the Chinese art reproduction are completely different to Van Gogh’s original.

5. The window in the art reproduction is brighter with more yellow tones.

6. The clothes hanging up, behind the bed are completely different to the original.

There are a lot more inconsistencies but you get the gist. You generally do get what you pay for.

Low quality Chinese art reproductions

Because Chinese art reproductions are offered at such a low price, you’re not going to get your oil painting painted on a good strong high quality canvas or have it painted with premium oils, they might say it, but it’s generally not going to happen and really for the price, you can’t really expect them to use high quality materials. Meaning quite simply your art reproduction is not going to last. Secondly, on a Chinese art reproduction company website, you may see your favourite painting being offered but the image you’re usually looking at is the original painting, not actually what you’re going to get, so do make sure you examine their examples.

The are many tipes of reproductions in china, the same is with reproductions of clothes, watches or shoes. You can buy a “Rolex” for 20USD or for 500USD (and many other prices), and all the fakes will be different, the quality will be different. The point is find I good painter, like anything else.
