Jean Léon Gérôme - Pygmalion and Galatea
This 1890 painting of Gerome’s depicts a tale from Ovid’s Metamorphoses of Pygmalion creating a sculpture of Galatea, whom he sees as the ideal woman and wishes could be real. She is brought to life by Venus and is passionately embraced by the sculptor in his studio.
Schiele The Embrace
This is one of Schiele’s last paintings, painted only 1 year before he died. This painting makes a stark contrast from Schiele’s usual explicitly sexual paintings. This painting is of himself with his wife and with her arm around his shoulder the painting depicts a very tender moment.
Kirchner The Kiss
