Fab Art Copy of Hieronymus Bosch’s The Garden of Earthly Delights

Recently and strangely enough we have had an influx of customers asking for our artists to paint fine art reproductions of Hieronymus Bosch’s The Garden of Earthly Delights. I thought therefore I had better show you our own work of Bosch’s great masterpiece.

The Garden of Earthly Delights is a triptych oil painting on oak panel painted by the Early Netherlandish master Hieronymus Bosch, housed in the Museo del Prado in Madrid. It dates from between 1490 and 1510, when Bosch was between 40 and 60 years old.  Our hand painted fine art replica painting is of course oil on canvas. The Garden of Earthly Delights, measures 220 cm × 389 cm.

The Left Panel

Also known as the Joining of Adam and Eve.  The painting shows Adam waking from a deep sleep to find God holding Eve by her wrist and giving the sign of his blessing to their union.

The Middle Panel

This panel depicts neither heaven or hell. Fantastic creatures mingle with the real; otherwise ordinary fruits appear engorged to a gigantic size. The figures are engaged in diverse amorous sports and activities, both in couples and in groups. Gibson describes them as behaving “overtly and without shame”, while art historian Laurinda Dixon writes that the human figures exhibit “a certain adolescent sexual curiosity”.

Things to Keep in mind when it comes to Hieronymus Bosch

As you can imagine The Garden of Earthly Delights is a very complex piece to paint. It takes a lot of skill, time and patience to recreate.  The detail is simply immense. Who commissioned Bosch’s Garden of Earthly Delights?

Nobody knows who this painting was commissioned for but in all probability it was for a private patron.  It’s doubtful it was for a church altarpiece since the hallucinogenic scene would probably be a bit over the top in a church setting.

When was Hieronymus Bosch’s famous painting the garden of earthly delights painted?

Bosch didn’t date his work but art historians think that The Garden of Earthly Delights was created between 1490 and 1505.  The first mention of The Garden of Earthly Delights is in 1517, one year after Bosch died.

Three since this is a triptych. A triptych is a series of three panels that are meant to be displayed together.

What does Hieronymus mean?

Hieronymus Bosch was born Jheronimus van Aken (meaning “from Aachen”). He signed a number of his paintings as Jheronimus Bosch. The name derives from his birthplace, ‘s-Hertogenbosch, which is commonly called “Den Bosch” (‘the forest’). But if you’re just wanting to know in general what Hieronymous means, it means “with a sacred name”.
